We are trying to make a difference in order to do that everything should be professional. Spelling errors can create a second meaning at times. Not only, punctuation is a problem, we have write it with expression. When talking about Tamil don't bring religion into it. Thank You JMyuren

There are only 6 or 7 classical languages in this world. From them only all other languages were born. In my view those 7 languages have the standard of language because they didn't borrow words from other languages. All of them are their own words. If the non classical languages give the lending words back, no non classical language will be left. Classical languages are very ancient languages. So, you must include all of the classical languages in the official languages of UN. This is similar to the respect we give to our mother. The classical languages are; 1. ARAB 2. Chinese 3. Greek 4. Latin 5. Sanskrit 6. Tamil 7. ? some African language. English must be included since it is an international language even though it is not a classical language. Thanking you.

Hi,Iam really impressed by the flooded response by our people. I can see few people interuupting in between. I request the moderators to remove unwanted messages and invalid names. This really disturbs others. Whether our goal is achieved or not, our unity is reflected here. So please don't disturb this

You need to redraft the letter along the lines suggested by Vicky Vigneswaran from Australia."A language without any grammatical mistakes" sounds pretty awful. The letter in its current form is unlikely to be treated seriously Ana Pararajasingham

I see some irresponsible tamils sign this document like "AAAAATamil is CRAP!!!." The moderators should take immediate action to remove such entries from the list of signatures. We need to make this effort a meaningful one. Those who think of it as a CRAPPY job may please keep away from signing this document.

I agree fully with MICKEY MOUSE! I think this is silly - the reason why there are languages used in the UN is because there are a lot of people whose original tongue is NOT English and hence can't understand English. For crying out loud, most Tamilians understand and speak PERFECT English. They ought to be proud of this and proud of the the fact that the UN doesn't see the need to include Tamil as a language. Instead, they put up this petition. And there are lots more trouble in the world to lend one's support, I think Tamils need to think globally and not so insularly and narrowly! Look at the bigger picuture of WHY there hasn't been a need for Tamil to be included and be proud of that!!

Thanks Babu. You have done a good job, keeping the content, but making it strong, without a significant alteration of the initial write-up. I hope the initial proponent is reading these comments.
Australië Vicky Vigneswaran - Jul 27, 2005

Please change the content, mistakes and recirculate, if you could. To: Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations Dear Sir, vaNakkam. Currently, there are following are the 6 official UN languages Chinese- 874 million English- 341 million Spanish- 322 million Russian- 167 million French- 72 million Arabic- 42 million * Source- The World 2004, Wikipedia As you know, Tamil is the one of the most traditional and most ancient languages in the world, which has more sources of root words than any other languages. Which has ancient and great Literature value. A language with great written grammar for letters, words and life as a whole from 800 B.C. and the language in which a recorded audio message was sent in Columbia space craft in the modern time. As you well aware Tamil is the Official language in more than a country. Tamil is one of the Official languages in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. More than 70 million people are speaking Tamil in India and Sri Lanka alone. The total population of Tamils around the world in about 80 Countries is around 90 million. Tamil is the language that has given "ThirukkuRaL" the world, the philosophy that is common for all the religions and for all the people irrespective of Language, Religion, and Country and beyond. This ThirukkuRaL is the second book that has been translated in more languages where Bible stands first. Bible is the holy book only for Christian community. It is astonishing and unfortunate that with about 90 million speakers, Tamils nowhere in this list. Let me put forward the case for the most widely spoken language in 4 countries of the world. 1. Absolute Number of Speakers Since we are increasingly living in a global society, the sheer number of speakers for Tamil definitely bolsters its bid. Tamil is origin for of many languages spoken through out the South India and closely resemble Tamil and it has a wide audience, both core and peripheral. Moreover, Tamil is the language of wider communication (LWC) for many parts of the world. 2. Global Reach Although it could be questioned whether this criteria is being met currently by Arabic, Russian and Chinese on the UN list, our purpose simply is to put forward a case for Tamil and not torpedo that of other languages. 3. Reach and effectiveness of UN Tamil with more then with 90 million speakers, must be included, If we are making serious effort for an effective United Nation. The some of the languages, have fewer speaker then Tamil, then why Not Tamil. Apart from the sub-continent, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, Tamil has considerable speakers in South East Asia, Africa, Western Europe, Australia and North America. We hope that you would seriously give a thought to the injustice being handed to Tamil by excluding it from the official UN languages list. The UN would do the world a much greater service were it to hold out its hand and reach out more effectively to the Tamil speakers of the world.
Verenigde Staten V. Babu - Jul 26, 2005

In my view, this kind of things cannot be done with a simple petition. Even the letter was written without proper input. The errors in spelling and grammar give an impression that the letter writers are not serious about their request. Can't we come up with something better than this? Vicky:
Australië Vicky Vigneswaran - Jul 26, 2005

Sorry, this is quite funny. Wish that Tamil folks should have rational thoughts and think like Thiruvalluvar. (Thirukkural didn't mention Tamil and Tamilians as it is written for the world). Tamil poet Kaniyan Poonguntanaar said "All countries are mine and all are my brothern". Wish that Tamil folks should come out of sectarian thoughts and think globally and more like secular humanists (border free world in which all human beings are equal). Think also about rationalist Periyar. Please don't waste time in sectarian idealogies. (Don't bug the Mickey Mouse; it's anonymous comment from a human being)
