Reparations for the police murders of young black men in St. Petersburg

In the interest of bringing our city together on the principles of social and economic justice, we the undersigned, demand that the City of St. Petersburg pay reparations to the families of four young African men who were victims of military-style murders by St. Petersburg Police and Pinellas County Sheriffs Department, acting under the authority of the City of St. Petersburg. All were ruled "justified" by State Attorney Bernie McCabe under dubious circumstances.

- TyRon Lewis, unarmed, 18 years old, shot and killed at point blank range during a traffic stop in 1996 by St. Petersburg Police

- Marquell McCullough, unarmed, 17 years old, shot at 15 times and killed as he sat in his truck in 2004 by Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies. The Sheriff's department later stated that McCullough was not the person being sought by deputies. Both patrol car cameras were mysteriously not working.

- Jarrell Walker, unarmed, 19 years old, shot in the back and killed while he lay asleep, his baby sleeping in the next room, 2005

- Javon Dawson, unarmed, 17 years old, shot twice in the back and killed after a graduation party, June of 2008 by St. Petersburg Police

Despite the deep divisions and tensions in our city, we can take a step towards unity by calling for reparations to be paid to the families of these four teenagers. Join us in this effort to right this historic wrong.
