13 signatures so far! Petition created by: Wayne Ramwell This petition aims to promote an awareness of women in Ireland during the latter half of the nineteenth century undergoing symphysiotomies without consent. They unknowingly underwent these operations which have later found out to be unnecessary. These procedures have left over 100 women with disabilities and have caused some women to suffer from incontinence. A solicitor in Ireland called Colm MacGeehin is representing just over 100 women trying to get them compensation for the suffering they have been through. The symphysiotomy operations only took place because of the Catholic influence in Irish Hospitals such as Our Lady's of Lourdes Hospital. 13 have signed so far - help us get to 1. We have achieved 1300% of our goal. Let's keep going! Sign the petition! Details, Impact and Progress A group has been formed called Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SOS) which is the only way the women can speak about their experiences with other people who underwent the same or similar experiences. In terms of media awareness there was recently a program on RTE which elucidated the symphysiotomy procedure and also explained the disabilities that these women have been left with. The reason for this petition is to try and encourage the Medical Council in Ireland to review these cases in an unbiased manner to ensure fairness and also to ensure that justice is served. Those responsible clearly need to be held accountable which hopefully is what this petition will achieve. Comments Note: This service is provided as a service to TakingITGlobal Members.
