Petition created by: John F Kharshiing NO DEGREE OF PROSPERITY CAN JUSTIFY MINING OF URANIUM No degree of prosperity could justify mining and accumulation of large amounts of highly toxic substances which nobody knows how to make "safe" and which remain an incalculable danger to the whole of creation for historical or even geological ages. To do such a thing is a transgression against life itself, a transgression infinitely more serious than any crime ever perpetrated by man. The idea that a civilisation could sustain itself on the basis of such a transgression is an ethical, spiritual, and metaphysical monstrosity. It means conducting the economic affairs of man as if people really did not matter at all. Sign the petition! Details, Impact and Progress The Instrument of Accession and the Annexed Agreement signed on 15 Dec 1947 by the Federation of 25 Khasi States and accepted by the Government of India on 17 August 1948, clearly states among other conditions that Land, Water and Revenue derived there from shall vest with the people. Any forceful misrepresentation of the mutually accepted treaty will be construed as gross violation of the rights of the Indigenous people. We draw the attention of the State Cabinet to the 16th March 2009 reports in The Tribune, Chandigarh, recently where doctors of the Baba Farid Center, in Bathinda, Punjab, and NGO which looks after special needs children has stated that winds coming from Afghanistan probably carry high quantity of uranium, raising the suspicion that the number of mentally retarded children in Punjab which is on the rise is due to high level of uranium and which has been detected in children of Punjab, and it is also a cause for birth deformities. Apart from birth deformities and mental retardation, the uranium is responsible for disorders like lung cancer, intestinal ulcer, impotence, infertility among women and damaging of brain apart from other cancers. Deadly weapons and bombs have been used in destroying bunkers and tankers in the war and areas within 1,000 miles get affected from this poison. This center sent hair samples of 149 children to the Micro Trace Mineral Lab, Germany, in June last year. The result of the test came in February this year, which stated that samples had high quantity of uranium. Out of 149, 116 samples were of children below 12 years and the rest were those of above 13 years. Samples of those below 12 years had 82 per cent of uranium while 13 years and above had 87 per cent. The results are shocking and astonishing as there is no atomic plant near Punjab. According to reports the Chairman of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) expressed his helplessness in the matter. He stated the country lacked the infrastructure to deal with such a situation, but has however offered to help in the investigations, if any, carried out by other agencies and to provide full technical back-up and help. We urge on the UNO, World Governments, the Government of India, the State Government of Meghalaya to ban Uranium Mining and not to act in such haste on this subject and to honour the Indigenous peoples voice expressed at the Public Hearing conducted by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) at Nongbah Jynrin on 13 June 2007, where 75% of the people in this remote corner state of India.
