43 signatures so far! Petition created by: hannah Margaret Curran MSP is calling for greater funding for the victims of domestic abuse in Glasgow East. Given the recent statistics, released by the Assistant Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police, which demonstrated a sharp increase in domestic abuse following Old Firm games, Glasgow requires better resources than those currently available. The Glasgow East Women's Aid is an outstanding organisation but it currently only has places of refuge for 5 victims of domestic abuse and around 20 women are on the waiting list. Margaret Curran would like the Scottish Government to provide direct funding to local organisations in the City of Glasgow so that they may help all those victims in need of refuge. 43 have signed so far - help us get to 1,000. We have achieved 4.3% of our goal. Let's keep going! Sign the petition! Details, Impact and Progress The Glasgow East Women's Aid (GEWA) provides counselling, advice, housing and other services to the rising number of domestic abuse victims in the East End of Glasgow. Unfortunately, despite huge demand, the GEWA does not have the resources to provide refuge to more than 5 female victims and their children. The Assistant Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police in Glasgow recently released figures, which show a terrifying increase in the number of domestic abuse incidents following Old Firm football matches in Glasgow. 27,000 domestic abuse incidents were reported to Strathclyde Police over the last year – an average of 74 attacks every single day in Glasgow. Given these unacceptable statistics, Strathclyde Police have declared a crackdown on domestic abuse in Glasgow. Strathclyde Police Force’s Chief Constable, Steven House suggested that the increase in reports also “indicates those who suffer abuse are now more confident, more comfortable and more assured when contacting the police”. However, even if women are more courageous in standing up to this appalling crime, the resources and sanctuary are not available to support victims in escaping their circumstances. I am calling on the Scottish Government to recognise the severity of this situation and provide emergency funding to the City of Glasgow so that more services may be available for all victims of domestic violence across the city.
