Petition to establish Nuclear Power in Australia

Australia currently depends on coal for approximately 80% of its energy generation, more than any other developed nation. The majority of the remaining power is generated by combustion of other fossil fuels, or by hydroelectricity, which is dependant on the destruction of vast ecosystems.

This produces hundreds of billions of tonnes of CO2 every year, none of which will be saved by initiatives like clean coal. Despite this, the Australian Federal Government refuse to acknowledge nuclear power as a valid means of energy generation while nevertheless exporting Uranium to be used in energy generation in less stable nations beyond our borders.

If nuclear energy is safe enough for most of Europe, Asia and North America, it's safe enough for Australia!

Nuclear power, embraced as the major energy source for France has given France the cleanest air of any industrialised country. Coal power releases as much as 100 times the radiation of a nuclear power plant in the form of carbon isotopes, as well as copious carbon emissions completely absent in the generation of electricity from nuclear energy. Also, waste produced as a by-product of coal power cannot be reprocessed, whereas waste produced from nuclear power can not only be reprocessed, but, with the evolution of new technologies, be used again to generate electricity.

Australia could use nuclear power to run desalination plants to provide vital water for industry, housing and agriculture, in a nation perpetually short of water, potentially having a dramatically positive effect on our country's economy, as well as replacing the coal power industry in the future with a minimal cost to the employment rate.

Nuclear energy could contribute to powering a sustainable and renewable energy industry in Australia, but we need to start the process now! Don't let misinformed environment activists stand between us and the advent of a potential energy revolution in Australia.
