68 signatures so far! Petition created by: Mag Melvy Jolie This petition is a follow-up of my previous one - "Keep Charlie and Joey Together on Australia's Home & Away! Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Rights!" (http://petitions.tigweb.org/charlieandjoey) It has become quite evident that Kate Bell, who played Joey Collins, will no longer be returning to the show. Unfortunately, the Home and Away writers have decided to throw the character of Charlie Buckton, played by Esther Anderson, back into a more 'normal' relationship with the character of Angelo. Personally, I find that the Charlie-Angelo storyline is illogical and not believable for more than one reason: ~ Firstly, Angelo shot Jack, another officer and good friend of Charlie's, and tried to cover it up. Naturally, he got into trouble and was hated by everyone around him, including Charlie. It makes no sense that Charlie would suddenly fall in love with him when she was so unhappy that he had returned to Summer Bay. ~ Secondly, even if you are bisexual, you don't switch from liking girls to liking guys in a span of a few weeks, moreover to liking a guy who shot your good friend, even if by accident. ~ Lastly, and most importantly, Charlie claimed that she loved Joey. When you Love someone, you don't get over them that quickly, especially if the break-up was a devastating and difficult one, which was the case for Charlie and Joey. True Love is not just what your heart feels, it is also a deep bond and a strong commitment. If Charlie truly loved Joey that much, she wouldn't have started a relationship with Angelo. There are many fans of the Charlie-Joey relationship, both from and outside the homosexual and bisexual communities that are enraged by the path Charlie's character is heading down. In fact, many of them feel that where redemption had been possible for Charlie in her relationship with Joey, that chance has now been snuffed out by her being with Angelo. Angry and disappointed comments are rampant on YouTube and some have even labelled Charlie as a "whore" (apologies for the quoting of such a crude word) because she seems to be unable to keep herself out of a man's bed. I have thus started this petition to give Charlie another shot at a proper relationship with another girl/woman and to raise awareness of what Love in a same-gender relationship truly is. Contrary to many people's belief, same-gender relationships are often much more long term than what was portrayed on the show, for the simple reason that the couple goes through more obstacles and difficulties together as they rebel against social stigma and 'norms'. As such, their relationship comes out stronger than before. It was unfair of Home and Away to end Charlie and Joey's relationship on a negative note simply because the masses couldn't accept it. In truth, the masses have often been more wrong than right. It takes a minority of strong-willed people to fight and champion a good cause. Looking around at the world today, there is just too much hatred and war to condemn Love, even if you might not understand it in a same-gender relationship. If you want to see Charlie in a proper relationship with another girl/woman, please do sign this... PS: Once again, when you sign this, it'd be even better to both sign and comment. That way, if this makes it into the press, they'll get to see all your views and opinions. It'll be creating awareness and helping out the homosexual and bisexual community too. Sign the petition! Details, Impact and Progress 25.7.2009: THIS PETITION IS STARTED!!! (late morning Singapore time) 26.7.2009: 22 signatures so far. That's not too bad, considering it's the weekend and everyone's away from their keyboards. Jamie sent out over 50 messages on YouTube yesterday and I have posted the link to the petition on Charlie-Joey.com along with the following paragraphs: That petition now holds top priority and it's basically for fans who want Charlie to break up with Angelo and develop a more stable and long-lasting relationship with another woman/girl instead. I started the petition because just like many of you, I felt that the Charlie-Joey storyline ended poorly and much too quickly, and that ever since then, the H&A writers have not allowed Charlie's character to get in touch with or deal with her not so newly-found identity. Personally, I was extremely enraged that it took them 3 whole months to finally let Charlie speak Joey's name. Like many other observers, I feel they are only doing so to raise viewership, and that the mention of Joey's name holds no promise whatsoever. I think it is important that people out there know that same-gender relationships are not negative and do not have to end badly. What better way to support the homosexual and bisexual communities than to let them see that a popular TV series is actually portraying such relationships in the right way? Furthermore, I think that their current illustration of Charlie's character as a woman who has a high sex drive and multiple sex partners, who can't seem to keep herself out of a man's bed, is highly discrediting not just to Charlie's true character, but to the actress who plays her (Esther Anderson) as well. I question their morales...So having a single homosexual relationship is completely wrong and must end in a bad way, while sleeping around with many men is perfectly fine? What exactly are they trying to say here? Do they not know how many young adults, teenagers and kids watch the show? I was brought up in a conservative and strict environment that didn't allow me much freedom, but at least that taught me two right things: 1) Rampant sex is dangerous and should be avoided. The urges of your body should not rule you. 2) Love is not just a feeling, but a strong commitment and a deep bond. If you truly Love somebody, and you suddenly lose them, you don't get over them in a span of a few weeks, and then decide to give yourself up to the man who once shot your good friend. So there, I started the petition, and I hope you all will support me in it. At this point, I must once again thank Charlie-Joey.com and its members for their constant support and affection, be it for the petitions I have started, the fanfiction I've written, or just simply for me as a person.
