Wars and armed conflicts are happening around the world, and we children and young people continue to suffer from them. It does not have to be so. Here is an opportunity to get involved and send a powerful message to world leaders! In 1996 a groundbreaking study – prepared for the United Nations by Graça Machel, a woman from Mozambique – recommended how to better protect children and young people affected by armed conflict. Now, ten years after that report, UN agencies, NGOs and other partners are conducting the "Machel Strategic Review" to assess progress. Findings from this review was presented to the UN General Assembly on 17 October 2007. But it is not only adults who have shared their ideas. As part of the strategic review process, a separate report entitled "Will you listen? – Young voices from conflict zones" has captured our voices; gathering the views, concerns and demands from 1700 of us, from 92 countries, through focus group discussions and an online survey. The majority of us participating were from countries affected by conflicts. Now we are asking you to add your name and join us in this exceptional opportunity to have our voices heard. The more of us that add our names, the more powerful our message will be. Please read our report, and support us by endorsing our demands! But these demands should not remain just words. We children and young people are partners in our own protection and the recovery of our communities. We are therefore asking you to join our discussion on how what we want can be turned into action.
