Details, Impact and Progress

The current speed limit on North Hill, Highgate, London (B519) is 30MPH. Cars often drive down this road far in excess of 30MPH and it would not be a surprise if somebody is killed cycling or crossing this road.

This road is in a residential area which has street lights and parking bays. There are a number of schools and a few shops. Children often cross this road. Recent Government research means we now know more about the effects of speed:

• hit by a car at 40 mph, 90% of pedestrians will be killed
• hit by a car at 30 mph, about 20% of pedestrians will be killed
• hit by a car at 20 mph, only 2.5% of pedestrians will be killed.

Slower traffic reduces air and noise pollution
