Stop Religious Driftback

Stop Religious Driftback

Recognizing that traditional, prophesy-based religion is strengthened by social, cultural and family pressures, and also recognizing the need to promote progressive beliefs and values as a more desirable alternative to the ancient creeds and claimed revelations of traditional religion, I hereby state as follows:

1. That as I get older I will resist pressures from family and society to embrace outdated religious institutions that propagate claimed prophesy and revelation.

2. That, if and when I should ever marry, I will not yield to pressures from my family (or the family of my spouse-to-be) to utilize a traditional religious institution for my marriage ceremony.

3. That, if I should ever have children, I will recognize that I can instill them with values and principles without resorting to indoctrinating them into traditional religion, and that I will not yield to cultural or family pressures to indoctrinate them into traditional religion via ceremonies such as baptism, confirmation, bar mitzvah, etc.

5. That I will attempt to instill in my children and others an appreciation for critical thinking, reason, tolerance, and other enlightened principles that, in my view, are of utmost importance to making the world a better and safer place for future generations.
