Petition created by: Liam O'Doherty

To: United Nations General Assembly

To: Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations

We, the citizens of the world, cry out in unison from every corner of
the globe, our voices striking a perfect harmony with one simple
demand: we call upon the United Nations to officially recognize
Inter-National High Five Day.

For too long we have been divided by our differences and forced to
firmly grasp the hands of those who oppress us. This archaic gesture
has roots in warfare, not jubilation.

International High Five Day, however, is the reason that random
strangers have been high-fiving you in the streets on the third
Thursday in April since 2002. It is a day based on the simple premise
that high-fives are a unifying gesture of solidarity and joy; an
appropriate greeting for our global age.

As evidence, we offer:
- High-fives may lead directly to world peace: it’s hard not to smile after spending an entire day high-fiving
- High-fives may prevent the next pandemic: handshakes are germy, and kind of gross when you think about them too long.
- High-fives may stabilize the worldwide economy: we suspect that every speculative business deal that contributed to the global
economic crisis was sealed with, you guessed it, a handshake, not a high five.

Further, we boldly declare that High-fives may accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals: high fives break down barriers and create feelings of solidarity required for a sustained and committed effort to overcome the divide and stigma which can exist between gender, age, education level, socioeconomic status and health.

Finally, upon this international year of youth, 2011 we request that the global partnership mentioned in MDG 8 be sealed at the Rio+20 earth Summit, not with a hand shake, but a High-five.

- For these reasons, we again call upon the United Nations to officially recognize International High Five Day to be held on the
third Thursday in April.
